Patricia Sloan

Sloan

Patricia Ann Sloan, 72, of Butler, passed away suddenly of natural causes on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2022, while in the comfort of her home.

Born in Butler on July 8, 1950, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Madeline (Betres) Esper.

She is survived by her husband, Greg Sloan, whom she married on March 27, 1987.

Patricia was a 1968 graduate of Butler High School, where she was involved with theater directing and production. She also served the community as a volunteer candy striper at Butler Hospital.

She earned her degree in education from Slippery Rock University the hard way. She went to night school, while caring for her two children. After obtaining her bachelor of science degree, she worked as an elementary school teacher in the Butler Area School District and at St. Paul Catholic School in Butler. She also had earned an associate of arts degree from Seattle Central Community College.

Pat was a member of All Saints Parish - St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, where she previously served as a Sunday school teacher.

She was also an avid runner for many years before she was forced to retire due to an injury. She competed in quite a few local area road races, and she did volunteer work for many years in support of the Butler Road Race.

She quietly and passionately supported, spoke for and took action in service to various human rights, animal rights and environmental causes.

She loved to be near the ocean, annually vacationing with her husband in Cape May, N.J., and spending time in California with her daughter.

She was also a loving and caring “mother” to eight different cats over the years.

Left behind to cherish and remember Pat is her husband, Greg; her daughter, Jennifer Simpson and son-in-law, Tracy Simpson, of San Diego, Calif.; her brother, Daniel Esper of Hawaii; numerous cousins, nephews and nieces; and of course, her cats, Ellie, Franny, Gracie and Zoey.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved son, Matthew Cunningham, who passed away on Dec. 2, 2001; her brother, Charles Esper; a niece, Mia Esper; and her special beloved cat, Hobbes.
