Edward C. Hull
Edward C. Hull, 75, of Butler, passed away peacefully at 1:05 a.m. EST on Aug. 31, 2022, and went to be with the Lord.
He was born on Feb. 3, 1947, in Troy, N.Y., and was the son of the late Guerdon and Edna (Tucker) Hull.
He always came to the aid of people, who truly respected his service and sacrifices, while surrounding him with love and comfort. And yet, they only knew a glimpse of the picture of his life.
He is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Church and Rebecca J. Hamilton. His daughter Robin Hull preceded him in death.
Before receiving his B.A. in business from Shippensburg, Ed enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during Vietnam. During that time he was honored with the Vietnam Service Medal and a Bronze Star. He was among those who survived a typhoon that nearly capsized their ship, and all on board fell sick, including the captain — everyone except Hull.
Ed was known even in his last days. He was a human with flaws and had moments of fear like anyone else, but he greeted others with their name, a smile and sometimes a quip that would make others laugh. He was so beloved among his peers he was voted by both residents and staff as “King” and “most loved” at his community’s Valentine’s Day celebration.
The seas were not always easy for Ed, but family say they are grateful that “no longer is he clung to a broken body, no longer will he run and grow weary.... Instead, he’s ripping the wind, whizzing past clouds, bracing the air beneath his feet — wearing running shoes with treads of silver, ordained with gold laces, and red like ruby slippers. Because there is truly ... no place like home.”
It’s easy to surmise a person’s life to the bullet points. Hull encompassed the following: insurance agent, golfer, Steelers fan, avid runner — completing more than six marathons, a good neighbor, a Christian and Butler Eagle subscriber. It’s not that these watermarks, attributes and accomplishments shouldn’t be celebrated. However, it’s the stories behind it all — the life, the heartaches and sacrifice, the joy and the love — that comprise a human being, which make a life so significant, not simply the facts. Ed embraced life to his last breath, and would most definitely want to encourage anyone who cares to read one word about his life and legacy to do the same.
