Main Street shut down for more than an hour as crews responded to a fire in the Chop Shop’s kitchen at 6:35 p.m. Monday.

According to Chris Switala, chief of Butler City Bureau of Fire, the initial call reported a fire coming from a roof vent in the restaurant, which was closed.

“We were on scene within two minutes,” he said. “There were no flames, but there was smoke showing,” he said. “The fire was at the grill.”

Switala said the fire was contained to the grill and started because of grease accumulation.

“The fire was primarily extinguished by the automatic extinguisher above the grill,” he said. “We were able to completely extinguish it within a matter of five minutes.”

There was no one in the restaurant at the time, and no injuries were reported, he added. There was only smoke damage inside the kitchen as a result of the fire.

Crews worked to clear smoke from the businesses on either side of the Chop Shop, the Brick House restaurant and Benjamin Beetle clothing store. The street reopened around 7:30 p.m.

Butler City Police, Butler Ambulance Service, Butler Township Volunteer Fire District and the Butler Veterans Affairs Fire Department all responded to the scene.
