Seneca board postpones appointing vice president

JACKSON TWP — The 4-4 tie vote that prevented the Seneca Valley School District board from electing a vice president at its June meeting will not be broken until December.

Board members found themselves in need of new top officers after former board president Eric DiTullio resigned as a result of a social media post that some felt was insensitive in the wake of the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

He did not resign from the school board, but from his position as president.

DiTullio’s vice president, Jim Nickel, moved up to board president, but the board’s vote to elect a vice president resulted in a 4-4 tie.

Half the board voted for Jeff Widdowson and half for Mike Jacobs. Board member Tim Hester was absent at the June meeting.

Solicitor Matt Hoffman suggested in June that the board vote again in August, when all nine board members were present.

Just as they were expected to do so Monday night, DiTullio suggested the board wait until the December board reorganization to elect a vice president.

“At this point, we don’t have to have a vice president,” DiTullio said.

Nickel asked DiTullio for his reasoning in not appointing a board member to the position until December.

“I’m not sure we have consensus on the direction the board should take,” DiTullio said.

Widdowson disagreed, saying there was no reason to put off electing a vice president.

The board then voted 6-3 to wait until the Dec. 5 reorganization meeting to fill the spot.

Widdowson, Leslie Bredl and Mark Jacobs voted against waiting.

The solicitor said after the meeting that any board member could run the school board meeting if Nickel cannot attend.
