Lorraine Tortorea
Lorraine “Rainy” Steighner Mudrick Tortorea, 94, of Butler, passed away Monday, July 11, 2022, while under the care of Amity Personal Care Home in Slippery Rock.
Born Dec. 19, 1927, in Herman, Lorraine was a daughter of the late Ralph and Marcella (Steighner) Steighner. She loved to tell everyone she was born at home and delivered by a doctor who arrived by sleigh.
She was a member of All Saints Parish, St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church.
Lorraine retired in 1983 from Bell Telephone, where she was employed as an operator. She went on to work for the County of Butler, retiring in 1989 from the dietary department of Sunnyview Home.
She loved playing bingo, visiting the casinos, cheering on “her” Pittsburgh Pirates, and being entertained by the “Golden Girls” and numerous game shows. Lorraine and her late husband, Bob, were excellent dancers and enjoyed dancing at all of the Big Band events in town. On her 90th birthday, she was honored with a proclamation presented by Butler County Commissioner Kevin Boozel designating Dec. 19 as “Lorraine Tortorea Day.”
Those cherishing her memory are her daughter, Cindy Mudrick Simpson of Lyndora, and her son, Michael Mudrick and his wife, Sue Fuhr Mudrick, of Highfield.
Also surviving are her loving sister, Norma (Robert) Lavorini of Butler, and her family; granddaughter Erica (Jeff) Hoyle and her family of Hickory N.C.; grandson David (Holly) Burtner and his family of Butler; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition, Lorraine’s extended family included her late husband's children, Robert (Cindy) Tortorea of Butler, Laverne (John) Trenz of Pittsburgh, their families, and the late Lynn Chervenak and her family of Pittsburgh.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert F. Tortorea, who passed away July 4, 2011; her former husband and father of her children, Michael Mudrick; and her two brothers, Richard and Ronald Steighner.
Lorraine will be remembered for her kind, giving heart and her many “Rainyisms.”
The family thanks her neighbors, Carol, Joyce, Bernie, Ron and Shirley, for remembering her with cards and visits after she moved from her longtime home in the South Hills of Butler. She appreciated all of you. We also thank Dr. Blinn and the staff of Amity Personal Care Home in Slippery Rock, not only for their wonderful care, but for becoming her “family” until her passing. Lorraine was fondly known as “Grandma” by the staff and residents of Amity Personal Care.
