5 Cubs boxers victorious at home show

Two fighters emerged victorious in their debuts. Two others picked up their first career wins.

All in all, a pretty good night for the home team as the Butler Cubs boxing program hosted its annual amateur Fight Night Saturday in the Cubs gym. Five of the seven Cubs boxers on the card won by decisions.

“I thought all of the decisions were fair,” Cubs boxing trainer Billy Wolfe said of the overall 11-bout card. “These were evenly-matched fights. The decisions were close. The ones we won, we could’ve lost. The ones we lost, we could’ve won.”

The exception to that rule was a 141-pound bout between Cubs boxer Tony Hosier and Cole Lightner of Anchor Boxing. Hosier, 26, of Kittanning, made his amateur ring debut a memorable one by handing Lightner three standing-8 counts — one in each round — during a dominant victory.

The third standing-8 was caused by a thunderous left hook that rocked Lightner’s headgear.

“I wanted to take the guy out in the first round, but he was tough,” Hosier said. “He was taking some punches. I just stuck to my game-plan. I was prepared for this.”

Hosier, 26, first dabbled in boxing at age 17. He works at the Kittanning YMCA and has been boxing out of the Cubs Hall for two months.

“My younger brother got involved in boxing and started lumping on me, beating me up pretty good,” Hosier said, laughing. I never had time to train for a fight before now.”

Hosier hopes to fight again in a couple of weeks.

Damien Kast, 12, of Butler won his amateur debut at 110 pounds in a close decision. Scoring their first career amateur wins out of the Cubs all were Leyland Panosetti (1-1), 12, of Herman, and Mars resident Luke Tate (1-2) at 108 pounds.

Tate, 15, has been involved in boxing for a year and a half. He previously played soccer. He is friends with fellow Cubs boxers Wyatt Wolfe and Andy Diaz, who both lost close decisions Saturday.

“I wanted to give boxing a try because of those guys and I really like it,” Tate said. “I felt I should have won my last fight, so this one feels pretty good. I love the adrenaline rush I get from boxing.”

Tate hopes to fight again next month. He comes to the Cubs gym three or four nights a week to practice and work out.

“It’s hard to say,” he said when asked about his boxing future. “This is my sport right now.”

The Cubs’ other winner Saturday night was T.J. Weaver, 17, of DuBois. He squared his record at 3-3 with a narrow win over Josh Hamilton of Southside Boxing at 155 pounds.

Weaver has been involved in boxing for six years. He estimates traveling down to the Cubs gym 21 times to train.

“It’s a long drive, but it’s worth it to me,” Weaver said. “You get a quality workout here and they know how to train you. This sport is just a good fit for me.”

When Weaver graduates from high school, he plans to join the Navy and its boxing team.

Wolfe dropped to 6-3 in the main event, losing a narrow decision to Elijah Petronic (4-4) of Jacks Boxing Gym.

“I suppose that could have gone either way,” Cubs boxing manager Don Spinetti said. “Wyatt had to get busier in there. He was backing up a little too much. He didn’t fight like he normally does. But he’ll learn from it.

“These were good matches tonight. They were close because they were evenly matched. This is the kind of show we strive to put on here every year.”
