South Butler to advertise for replacement board member

JEFFERSON TWP–After some disagreement last week, the South Butler County School Board members have agreed on a method to solicit candidates for the remaining term of Dale Fennell.

Fennell's resignation from the board was approved at Wednesday's school board meeting, and takes effect Thursday.

At last week's meeting, board member Rebecca Boyd disagreed with board president Donna Eakin's suggestion that the board solicit candidates for the seat via word of mouth and the district's website and social media accounts.

Boyd said the district should advertise the seat more widely to attract a wider variety of candidates.

On Wednesday night, the board agreed to advertise the seat in the Butler Eagle's classifieds section and online products for two days.

Candidates, who must reside in the district, will be asked about their employment, years lived in the district, any children in the district, prior experience, work on any committees in the district, and other pertinent community or business activities they have pursued.

Candidates can also include an essay of any length they feel would be appropriate.

Eakin said letters of interest from candidates can be sent to the district's administration office and must be postmarked by May 20.

School board members agreed they will interview candidates on June 7 in preparation to vote on a replacement at their Wednesday meeting.

Eakin advised board members to compile potential questions to ask the candidates during the interview process.

Should the board not receive any letters of interest, which Eakin said would be highly unlikely, solicitor Tom Breth said an individual could be appointed within 30 days of Fennell's resignation.
