Raiders don’t wilt

Seneca Valley softball beats Butler 12-2

Lexie Hames made sure Seneca Valley’s softball team didn’t have a let down following a monumental upset. Hames came on in relief with for the Raiders, ringing up 12 strikeouts to lead Seneca Valley to a 12-2 win over Butler in Section 2-6A on the road.

The Raiders didn’t want to take a loss to the Golden Tornado after Seneca Valley scored its biggest win of the season last Friday when they upset previously unbeaten Hempfield 2-1.

The Raiders (7-6, 5-5) plated four runs in the top of the fourth inning. However, Butler rallied in the bottom of the inning, scoring when Lilly Vacari hit a home run in the bottom of the frame.

The Golden Tornado (0-10, 0-9) wouldn’t get any closer as Butler dropped its third fourth straight game by double figures. Ainsley McClaim singled three times for the Raiders. Hayley Walter also connected on a double and singled. Kara Pasquale also singled three times for Seneca Valley.

Freeport 4, Knoch 1 — A strong all-around performance from Sydney Selker allowed the ‘Jackets to keep pressure on Highlands for second place in Section 1-4A. Selker struck out six batters over seven innings of work, scattering three hits. Selker also recorded a double and drove in a run.

Natalie King had a game-high two RBIs for Freeport. Sophie Brandon drove in the lone run for Knoch.

Karns City 10, Clarion 0 — Ava Fox and Jess Dunn each drove in three runs apiece to help the Gremlins beat the Bobcats in five innings. Fox hit a home run for Karns City. Ali Walker threw five shutout innings for Karns City, striking out five and only allowing one hit.

Baseball

Mars kept pace with Hampton in the race for the Section 2-5A crown by pasting Penn Hills 10-3. Thomas Mclaren struck out 10 batters in five innings of work to earn his third win of the season on the mound for the Planets.

Trey Wagner, Nate Leshinsky and Zack Orosz all drove in two runs for Mars (12-3, 9-1). Johnny Fratto also went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Planets, while Jake Johnson went 2-for-4, scored twice and drove in a run.

Boys Tennis

The Golden Tornado swept the doubles’ matches, beat Knoch 4-1 to finish its season 6-6 on the year. Butler’s Ben Busler also won a tiebreak at No. 2 singles against the Knights’ Jake Santora to give the Golden Tornado a key victory. Knoch’s Quinlin Howison up the Knights’ lone victory at No. 3 singles.

Boys volleyball

Butler swept Fox Chapel 25-14, 25-20, 25-20 in Section 1-AAA action. The Golden Tornado were led by Cam Ray, who handed out 33 assists. Colten Welter had 10 kills, while Tyler Figlioli had 16 digs for Butler (7-6, 5-4).
