Miller Minutes: Weekend Events

Things are starting to heat up in terms of weather and county events this weekend. If you can dodge the raindrops, be sure to take a hike at McConnells Mill State Park or go disc golfing at Moraine State Park.

If neither of those float your boat, consider the many arts events offered in the community by students, neighbors and organizations.

Grove City College, 100 Campus Drive, is hosting folks from miles around during this Family Weekend. Dance and art shows, a one-act festival, bands, ensembles and choirs are just a fraction of the events planned. For a complete list of activities, visit alumni.gcc.edu/familyweekend.

Butler High School students are performing their One-Act Plays at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the senior high auditorium, 120 Campus Lane. Admission is $1.

The Butler YMCA, 339 N. Washington St., will have its Healthy Kids Day from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday featuring food, vendors and activities.

The Bach Society Community choir has two free concerts in the area this weekend. The first is at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Center Presbyterian Church in Slippery Rock, then at the same time Saturday at Tower Presbyterian Church in Grove City. Walk 4 Water supports the Honduras Hope Mission, a group that educates about the dichotomy between survival and education in other countries. Rich-Mar Rotary Club and the District 7280 Keystone Rotary Club will host a walk in Adams Township Community Park, 698 Valencia Road, from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday. The trail accommodates people of any age, so all are encouraged to participate and donate if possible.

Butler Art Center’s Artisan and Vendor Market will make work by locals available for purchase from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at 344 S. Main St. There will be a glass-blowing demonstration outside the art center during the course of the day.

The Butler Paranormal Conference is flying in from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Tanglewood Senior Center, 10 Austin Ave., Lyndora, with speakers and a variety of vendors. Admission is $15.

North Country Brewing’s Tunes, Brews and a Shopping Excuse will feature music by female band Caffeine and Tourmaline and female vendors galore at its location at 111 Arrowhead Drive, Slippery Rock, from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday.

The Butler County Humane Society’s 15th Fur Ball is from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Butler Country Club, 310 Country Club Road, Penn Township. Attendees can dance, eat, participate in auctions and even meet a few animals as a way to support the organization.

Yinz better attend the grand opening of a new business at the Streets of Cranberry Saturday. Steel City Garage, a clothing brand celebrating Pittsburgh culture, will open its garage doors for a music, food and fun-filled events from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
