Miller Minutes: Weekend Events

Spring is upon us in terms of weather conditions as well as events throughout the region. Kennywood will open its season on Easter Sunday, egg hunts are in full swing, and activities outdoor and indoor alike are available this weekend despite the holiday.

Saturday is your last chance to participate in egg hunts in the area. Mars Area Public Library, 107 Grand Ave., Mars, is hosting its Easter Family Fun Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., complete with games, crafts and food.

The Lions Club of Zelienople’s egg hunt will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday in Zelienople Community Park, 402 E. Beaver St., and is open to children age 12 and younger.

Mount Chestnut Presbyterian Church starts its Community Egg Hunt at 10 a.m. Saturday and will offer prizes, candy and refreshments.

North Main Street Church of God, 1201 N. Main St. Extension, takes a unique approach to Easter celebrations with its “Twas the Morning of Easter” story walk. From 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot, the family-friendly event offers a stroll through an illustrated story. Children can collect prizes along the way, and refreshments will be offered on the playground following the walk. Register at northmaincog.org/storywalk.

This weekend is the last chance folks have to see Harmony Museum’s exhibit titled “Western PA 1753 to 1814 — George Washington to Commodore Perry.” Rare artifacts, including uniforms, guns, paintings and swords, are on display from the collection of Ken Hoover of Michigan. The exhibit highlights a time in early Harmony society history and George Washington’s visit. The show can be viewed until Saturday. A reservation-only lecture by Hoover will take place on the show’s last day. To reserve a spot, visit harmonymuseum.org. Tickets to the exhibit are $5.

Slippery Rock University’s Early Childhood and Elementary Community Engagement Initiative will host “Tuneful Tales” in Swope Music Hall from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday. The event includes a concert of “The Ugly Duckling” and an instrument petting zoo for children to learn more about what makes beautiful music. The event is free, and donations are encouraged.

Also on the SRU campus Saturday morning is the Craft and Vendor Show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Morrow Field House. More than 50 vendors, multiple raffles and various concessions will be available for folks to explore. The event benefits Twirling to Fight Cancer, an organization where baton twirlers raiser funds for cancer and its survivors.

The Model Train Club of Zelienople will have an open house event fit for even the youngest train enthusiast. A train display will be set up at the Masonic Lodge, 330 E. Beaver St., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

And Moraine State Park’s Sights and Sounds of Spring hike will be Friday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The nearly two mile hike will take the short loop Sunken Garden Trail.
