SRU baseball splits with California

The Slippery Rock University baseball team split four games against California (Pa.) over the weekend, including a 5-1 win and 17-3 loss Sunday at Critchfield Park.

Butler graduate Justin Stewart, the Vulcans’ catcher, went 3-for-3 in the nightcap with a home run, double, single and three runs scored. California is 17-7 overall this season, 3-3 in PSAC West play.

Seneca Valley graduate Anthony Cinicola had a double and two RBI for The Rock in the second game.

Luke Trueman tossed a complete game for The Rock in Sunday’s first game. He struck out nine, allowed six hits and threw only 79 pitches.

Jon Kozarian and Joel Spishock had four hits each for SRU (15-5, 3-5) on the day while Eddie Morris had three hits, including his fifth home run of the year.

Slippery Rock High School graduate Ricky Mineo and Stewart came up with stellar performances Saturday as No. 22 SRU and California (Pa.) split a PSAC West baseball doubleheader in Washington, Pa.

Stewart belted a grand slam in the sixth inning of the first game, putting California ahead and paving the way to a 5-4 victory.

Mineo (3-1) picked up his first complete game of the season in the second game, striking out eight and scattering six hits in a 2-0 Rock win. He threw 104 pitches and walked a season-low one batter.

Kozarian and Connor Hamilton delivered run-scoring singles to break a scoreless tie in the seventh for SRU. Hamilton had three hits in the second game, Abraham Mow and Joe Ehland two each.

Morris had four hits for The Rock in the twinbill, including two doubles and two RBI. Hamilton had four hits on the day and Kozarian blasted his first home run of the year in the first game.
