Harold Shirey

Harold M. Shirey, 68, of Slippery Rock, passed away peacefully while under the care of hospice and his loving family Friday, April 1, 2022, at his brother’s home.

Harry was born on Nov. 21, 1953, the son of the late Linton D. Shirey Sr. and late Mary Jane Helm Shirey.

Harry served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Naval Reserve on the USS Glover from 1972 to 1978. In the service, he received a Medal of Honor and a National Defense Service Medal. He worked as a mechanic at Bill Errera’s Auto Sales and Service in Butler. Harry was the commander in chief at the American Legion Post 243 in West Sunbury. He was a member of the Butler County Law Enforcement Officers Association and was an associate member of the Fraternal Order of Police. In his spare time, he was very passionate about helping others and working on anything with wheels.

Harry is survived by four brothers, Linton Duane Shirey Jr. and his wife, Dara, David Wayne Shirey and his wife, Elizabeth, James Gale Shirey, and Stephen Chas Shirey and his wife, Dee; two sisters, Susan May Bonner and Linda Christine Shaffer (late, James); and numerous nieces and nephews. Although Harry had no children, he treated his nieces and nephews as his own. Harry will be remembered by his family for always picking out the most perfect gifts to give. He had a very big heart and generous spirit.

Harry was preceded in death by his sister, Katherine Louella Hogg.

SHIREY — A memorial visitation for Harold M. Shirey, who died Friday, April 1, 2022, will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the WILLIAM F. YOUNG FUNERAL HOME, 132 Main St., West Sunbury.

Following the visitation, the Sons of the American Legion Post 243 will conduct a service at 4 p.m. in the funeral home, followed by military honors provided by the Moniteau Ceremonial Squad.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Legion Post 243, 1431 W Sunbury Road, West Sunbury, PA 16061.
