Miller Minutes: Weekend Events

Students in the Butler all-school musical “Schoolhouse Rock: Live!” sparked standing ovations last weekend. The ensemble cast displayed adept skill in acting, singing and dancing to familiar favorites. Congratulations to the students on a job well done, from one theater kid to another!

This weekend, the county is gearing up for warm weather with spring and Easter celebrations galore.

Grove City College’s student Symphonic Concert Band and Wind Ensemble will perform folk songs and familiar arrangements in Ketler Auditorium on campus at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The concert is free and open to the public.

On Saturday, the Sons and Daughters of Italy are holding a Spring Craft and Vendor show at 338 S. Main St. from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The show will feature 25 local vendors, and the kitchen and bar will be open for attendees to grab a bite while they shop.

St. Patrick’s Day celebrations still are in full swing as evidenced by the Shamrock Shuffle at Grace Church of Harmony at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. Participants have the option of running or walking a half marathon, 5K or one-mile distance. Food will be available following the race. Those interested can visit GetFitFamilies.com for more information.

A monthly dance class will teach West Coast swing at the Cranberry Municipal Building beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday. Cost is $15 and includes a lesson, social ballroom dancing and snacks.

Westminster College will host the a cappella group Straight No Chaser at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Orr Auditorium on campus. Their renditions of R&B, smooth jams and pop favorites will keep audiences engaged all evening. Tickets can be purchased at westminster.edu/celebrity.

On Sunday, St. Wendelin School, 211 Saint Wendelin Road, will host its Easter Bunny Pancake Breakfast school fundraiser from 8 a.m. to noon. Framed pictures with the Easter Bunny will be available for purchase along with pancakes, sausage and more.

The following two events will take place next weekend, but mark your calendars if you don’t want to miss them!

Soroptimist International of Butler County is hosting a luncheon April 2 at Butler Country Club with vendors, buy-a-prize and a basket raffle to improve the lives of women and girls in the community. Proceeds will go toward the Live Your Dream Award and other community service programs. All tickets are presale only and can be purchased by contacting Marianne at 724-321-1309. Doors will open at 10 a.m. with lunch at noon.

Victim Outreach Intervention Center (VOICe) and Slippery Rock University will host the exhibit “Exhale: A Night of Art, Healing, and Expression” from 6 to 8 p.m. April 5 in the Smith Student Center on campus. As April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, VOICe will be operating the annual clothesline project where students can add encouraging messages, quotes or their stories onto a white T-shirt and hang it on the line. The messages are typically displayed in public areas to emphasize unity and raise awareness about sexual trauma.
