BMH patient accused of assaulting two nurses

Police filed charges Monday against a woman they say hit two nurses while she was seeking treatment Friday at Butler Health System Urgent Care in Butler Township.

Lanaya A. Barnes, 22, of Center Township, faces felony charges of aggravated assault and misdemeanor counts of simple assault. She has yet to be arraigned on the charges.

According to charging documents, police arrived around 7:40 p.m. Friday to investigate the report from the facility’s security office. Police said they spoke to both nurses involved, one of whom had documents for the injuries sustained.

The injured nurse told officers that Barnes became upset as she went to check her vitals and administer a COVID-19 test. She told police that Barnes resisted the test, saying she didn’t have the virus and was tested recently.

Police said Barnes then tried to leave, and the nurse tried to stop her.

“(The nurse) put her arm up to block the doorway when Barnes used her elbow to strike (the nurse),” police said.

The nurse later was seen by a doctor for muscle pain and a bruise on the head. In the doctor’s documentation, the doctor also had noted concerns of a concussion.

Police said after the first nurse was struck, other members of the staff moved Barnes to the ER, where she again resisted and tried to leave. The second nurse allegedly told officers that Barnes hit her, too.

“When Barnes reached (the nurse), standing in the doorway, Barnes used an open hand strike to (the nurse’s) face,” police said. “(The nurse) advised her glasses were knocked off her face from the strike.”

Police said they also spoke with Barnes at the hospital, and she claimed she did not remember hitting anyone.

“Barnes advised she has been struggling with mental health and came to BMH (Friday) because she knew she needed help,” police said.

A date for Barnes’ arraignment is unknown.
