Butler STUCO helps students ‘say yes to the dress’

Believe it or not, prom season is around the corner, and Butler Senior High School’s student council has zipped into the spirit with a Prom Extravaganza.

Back in February, the guidance office and STUCO advisors curated donations of dresses, shoes, purses, makeup and more for students to find “the perfect fit” for free.

The remaining dresses from the first event will be accessible to students through the school library for the remainder of the year. Jenni Gassert, English teacher and STUCO adviser, said the first event was such a success they plan on having another next year.

“We held the event over lunch, the girls could show up and we’d help them pick dresses to try on,” she said. “You could go through the accessories, we had cookies and prom favors from past years that we gave away as gifts.”

The goal, Gassert said, is to provide students with a chance to feel beautiful and special.

“We’re trying to provide a foundational prom dress shopping experience they couldn’t have otherwise,” she said. “Some students don’t get to go shopping with their mom.”

The girls in attendance were supportive of each other, Gassert said.

“My favorite moment was when one girl was trying a dress on and she said ‘I don’t know how this looks’ and the whole group of girls said ‘you look so good you have to get it!’ They were building each other up instead of down, praising each other and being positive,” she said.

Seeing how quickly word spread about the first event, Gassert hopes to find dresses in up-to-date styles and varying sizes to add to their inventory.

“It’d be awesome reaching out into the community to get more involvement, so we could offer more with finding the perfect dress,” she said.
