Two teens accused of robbing Butler gas station at gunpoint

Butler Police arrested and charged two 16-year-old boys, who they say robbed a gas station convenience store at gunpoint Saturday in Butler.

Charges were filed Sunday against the teens, one of Butler and the other of Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh boy is charged with felonies robbery and criminal conspiracy, and the Butler boy is charged with felony robbery.

The Pittsburgh boy is in Butler County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bond, and the Butler boy has been released on a nonmonetary bond.

Police said they were called around 10:15 p.m. Saturday to APlus, 400 W. Jefferson St., for a reported robbery.

“The caller, the cashier, advised that several males had entered the store and pointed a gun at her and proceeded to empty the cash register and flee the store,” said the investigating officer in the affidavit.

Police said as they arrived, they saw the Pittsburgh boy walking in the area of North Chestnut Street. Police said he was wearing dark clothing and fled from the officer who saw him.

Multiple departments, including Butler City, Butler Township and state police, chased the boy and caught him on the 300 block of Federal Street.

“(The Pittsburgh boy) was found to be in possession of $374 in assorted U.S. currency and had a black face mask with him,” police said.

Police said as they were processing the Pittsburgh boy at the Butler Police Station, they interviewed the Butler boy, who was brought to the station by his mother, who said that he had been involved in the robbery, police said.

According to documents, the mother told police the PIttsburgh boy, who was also dating her daughter, stayed at her home Friday night.

“(The mother) advised that (the Pittsburgh boy) and her son had been having issues as well, to the point where (her son) claimed to her that (the Pittsburgh boy) threatened him with a gun recently,” police said.

In the affidavit, police said security footage from the store shows the boy wearing identical clothing “and pointing a handgun with a silver slide at the cashier in the APlus.”

Police said the clothes the Butler boy wore to the police station matched those worn by one of the people caught on the security footage.

Police did not note in the documents if they recovered the gun.

Both boys have preliminary hearing scheduled for Monday before District Judge William Fullerton.
