Zalis

John “Jack” William Zalis Jr., 84, of Slippery Rock, passed away in Gettysburg on Friday, Feb. 25, 2022.

He was born on Sept. 25, 1937, in West Liberty Borough, to John William Zalis Sr. and Esther Lillian Ramsey Zalis.

John served in the U.S. Army as a heavy equipment operator for four years.

After his time in the service, he met Karen Alice Musguire, and they were married on June 19, 1958.

John was a truck driver for various companies for a few years. He then worked for Pullman Standard in Butler, where he was a welder in railroad production for 18 years. He also worked in construction and home remodeling up until his retirement.

As a child, John and his family attended St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Slippery Rock.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather to his family. He had a gentle soul, was slow to anger, and was quick to forgive. He was a friend and mentor to many.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed everything dealing with the outdoors, which included camping throughout the summers, annual snow skiing trips and boating with his family. He enjoyed watching football, especially the Steelers.

Survivors include his wife, Karen of Slippery Rock; one son, Steven V. (Cheryl) Zalis of Newark, Ohio; three daughters, Leigh Ann (Jack) Mundell of New Castle, Jodi L. Barrett of Slippery Rock and Jacalyn S. Leu of Harveys Lake, Pa.; two brothers, Robert B. (Virginia) Zalis of Butler and Joseph P. (Joyce) Zalis of Pleasantville, Ky.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Dolores Cleaver.

ZALIS — Family and friends of John “Jack” William Zalis Jr., who died Friday, Feb. 25, 2022, will be received from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 3 p.m. Saturday at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. William Mumaw of Center Presbyterian Church officiating.

Interment will be in West Liberty Cemetery.
