Butler Memorial Hospital’s main lab accredited

Butler Memorial Hospital’s main laboratory has earned accreditation through the Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists.

According to a news release from Butler Health System, CAP has awarded accreditation to the Butler Memorial Hospital main laboratory based on results of a recent on-site inspection.

The CAP accreditation process is designed to ensure the highest standard of care for laboratory patients. The program’s inspections examine a laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years.

“The laboratory service at Butler Health System is state of the art and second to none,” said Ken DeFurio, BHS president and CEO. “It is a superb and foundational part of BHS. CAP accreditation, through a rigorous and thorough survey process, validates the excellent work performed by our outstanding team.”

CAP inspectors also examine laboratory staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and record, and overall management, according to the news release.

The accreditation program began in the early 1960s, and is viewed by the federal government as being equal-to or more-stringent-than the government’s own inspection program.
