A section of railroad tracks near South Monroe Street was on fire at about 8:30 a.m. Monday morning.
The Butler Bureau of Fire was not dispatched to the smoky blaze, and firefighters were unaware of the incident on Monday.
Fire personnel said they understand those tracks are owned by the Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad Company.
Men at the scene were thought to be employed by B&LE, but the railroad’s office in Homewood, Ill., could not be reached on Monday.
Because B&LE officials could not be reached, it is unknown if the fire was an emergency or part of ongoing work on the tracks.
