Howard E. Meyer
Howard E. “Gene” Meyer, 87, of Slippery Rock, passed away Dec. 7, 2021, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Howard was born Jan. 24, 1934, in Fulton, Mo. He was the son of the late Floyd Meyer and Elizabeth Adams Meyer.
Howard graduated from Fulton High School in 1952. After graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and proudly served his country from 1952-1957, during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged with the rank of machinist mate 1st class, serving on the USS Freemont.After returning from the Navy, Howard attended the University of Missouri School of Mines & Metallurgy. He graduated in 1962 with a B.S. in mechanical engineering.From 1962-1965, he lived in Effingham, Ill. He worked for Slumber J, logging the oil wells, before taking a job with Norge Company. In 1965, he moved to Laurel, Md., and worked for Chromalox, until 1967. He then moved to Glenshaw, Pa., where he worked for E.L. Weigand, until starting his own company, Heat Exchange and Transfer, in 1968. Howard moved to Slippery Rock in 1978, and eventually sold his company after 25 years of owning and operating it. The company is still in existence today. He then became a trucker as an owner/operator, and later, a land and property developer.Howard married his high school sweetheart, Florence Nicholson, on Oct. 10, 1954, at the United Methodist Church in Fulton, Mo. He and Florence were blessed with four children. Florence passed away on Sept. 12, 2003.Howard then married Norma Hamilton on June 5, 2004. Norma passed away March 5, 2016.Howard was active in the development and improvement of his community, serving as Slippery Rock mayor and a chairman of the Butler County Republican Committee. He was awarded Rotarian of the Year, and served on the board of directors for Slippery Rock University.Howard was a past member of the Lions Club.He enjoyed hunting with his friends and family, watching college football and old Westerns, and running tractors, bulldozers and other heavy equipment.Howard is survived by his sons, Kenneth E. Meyer of Carmichael, Calif., James L. Meyer of Parker, Pa., and Michael L. Meyer of Astor, Fla.; five grandchildren, James, Jennifer, Elle, Nathan and Kaylee; and two great-grandchildren, Augustus and Theodore.Howard was preceded in death by his wives; a daughter, Rebecca Louise Meyer; a daughter-in-law, Joyce M. Meyer; and a brother, James L. Meyer.MEYER — The family of Howard E. “Gene” Meyer, who died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2021, will welcome friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Jamison-McKinley Funeral Home, 117 N.
