Vandals broke into the Penn Theater on Main Street in Butler and spray painted the screen, stage and other areas, according to the Butler Redevelopment Authority.

The authority, which owns the vacant building, reported the incident to city police.

Walls, doors and seats were also spray painted. Authority officials said the words and pictures that were spray painted in the building have been seen in other areas of the city.

The vandals entered through a rear door, which was in the process of being reinforced.

The damage was discovered by an authority maintenance worker, but it is not clear when the break-in occurred.
