57,000 - That's the number of pounds of electronic, hazardous waste Butler Twp. collected over a 1-year period

Butler Township collected more than 57,000 pounds of electronic and hazardous waste last year.

The township operates on a free at-will pickup system for large items in four categories which are paint, computers, televisions and electronic equipment, through its garbage contractor, Waste Management.

Butler Township manager Tom Knights said from the fourth quarter of 2020 to the third quarter of 2021, the service collected 8,615 pounds of paint, 5,419 pounds of computer equipment, 6,299 pounds of electronic equipment and 36,835 pounds of televisions, for a total of 57,168 pounds.

The fourth quarter report for 2021 has yet to be compiled, but Knights said the service has been well-received by township residents since it was first introduced in January 2019.

“I think it has been really successful,” Knights said. “Especially when you look at the alternative of disposing of these items, which is pretty costly.”

Knights said residents can call the service when they have materials they want to dispose of, and, depending on the waste, they may get a disposal kit to prepare for pickup.

The preparation for different kinds of waste may differ, according to Knights, because different organizations handle pickup of different waste products.

Knights said the township's contract with Waste Management is for eight years, and it will continue to be offered next year.

“The fact we were able to work this into the contract and do it as such where there is no additional fees, I think that is very positive,” Knights said. “The hazardous and electronic waste is for the duration of our contract, so there will be no changes to it next year.”

Township residents can call 1-800-449-7587 to schedule a hazardous waste pick-up from Waste Management.
