2 face drug charges in Butler

Authorities are claiming two people were found with three bricks of suspected heroin or fentanyl in their Butler apartment earlier this month.

The Butler County Drug Task Force filed charges against Steven M. Amon, 48, and Lois J. Smith, 27, after they were arrested at their apartment on the 300 block of Third Street.

According to charging documents, Butler County probation officers learned Amon, who was being sought for a probation violation, was living in the apartment with Smith. Police said Smith was also known to have an arrest warrant out of Mercer County.

Detectives said that on Dec. 10, probation officers knocked on the door of the apartment, and after Amon answered the door they arrested him and Smith.

“A probation officer conducted a sweep of the apartment and observed a heroin or fentanyl stamp bag laying on the floor just inside the bedroom, a Crown Royal bag hanging behind the bedroom door with syringes protruding and a small amount of what appeared to be crystal meth on the table,” said detectives in the affidavit.

Probation officers contacted task force detectives, who then conducted a more thorough search, along with Butler City Police.

Authorities allegedly found multiple amounts of paraphernalia related to cocaine, crystal meth and heroin use as well as multiple digital scales.

Detectives then uncovered multiple stashes of suspected heroin or fentanyl, totaling about 151 stamp bags and a small amount of crystal meth, according to the affidavit.

Detectives said they went on to search phones for the alleged dealers, and they found a number of text chains they believe were incriminating.

“A manual examination of Amon's phone shows multiple conversations involving drug sales, both between him and his suppliers and him and his customers,” detectives said.

Only Amon's identification was found in a safe along with some of the drugs in question, but the text messages also allegedly appeared to show Smith's involvement.

“There are also multiple text conversations with several different customers where Amon states that he is sending Lois with the drugs and also tells the customers where to meet Lois for the drugs,” detectives said.

Both Amon and Smith are expected to appear for a preliminary arraignment Jan. 4 before District Judge William Fullerton.
