Scams, family loss bill sponsored by Bonner pass House

Rep. Tim Bonner, R-8th, had two of his sponsored bills pass unanimously in the House of Representatives last week.

House Bill 1822 was written to decrease financial stress on families who lose a loved one by allowing them access to the deceased individual's bank account to cover expenses.

If the individual passes away with $20,000 in a financial institution, that institution could release funds to certain relatives without probate proceedings.

House Bill 1985 intends to protect Americans from telemarketing scams.

The legislation would make an exception to the Wiretap Act by allowing those who receive scam calls to excuse the recording of the call with the intention of enforcing consumer protection laws.

The bills will now be up for consideration by Senate committees.
