Project aims to keep residents warm

A Gloves for Love box has been placed in the Slippery Rock community's gazebo with the intention of sharing warm clothes with passers-by this winter season.

The box is decorated with a red ribbon and has the phrase 'Give what you can, take what you need, help warm up the town, with a good deed!' stamped on its lid.

Sonya Lenz, board member at Slippery Rock in Bloom, said she was approached by a friend about putting a box out for people to donate or take gloves, scarves, hats and other warm winter accessories as needed. According to Lenz, it's not any group or organization that's in charge of the box, it's a town-run initiative.

“It's residents of the towns doing it for residents of the town,” Lenz said.

According to Lenz, the community has been supportive of the cause. When she and her friend brainstormed the idea, a local hardware store gladly donated the box and another local woman made the decal stickers for the lid.

“The community has been very supportive and wondering how they can help,” Lenz said.

Lenz said people are always looking for ways to help and don't know how. Gloves for Love gives them the opportunity.

“I think there's people who really want to help but they don't know how. Maybe they don't want to join an organization to do it,” Lenz said. “I feel like those who sew and crochet would love to make things for this.”

The box will be available for people to take or leave items until April 1. Lenz said any leftover donations will be given to Feed My Sheep Food Cupboard in Slippery Rock. She hopes this becomes an annual initiative.

“It's a box where anyone can take or leave things. Even if someone is walking around without gloves and it's cold out, it's for anyone,” Lenz said. “We're very excited about it.”
