Dolores Fowler
Dolores Jean “Dee” Fowler, a longtime resident of Freeport, and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died peacefully on Nov. 11, 2021.
Dolores was born Dec. 12, 1929, in Sligo, Pa., and was the daughter of the late Ressie (Guntrum) and Gilbert Henry Sr.
Dolores was married to her beloved husband, Raymond “Shorty” Fowler, who preceded her in death in May 2002.
Dolores is survived by her son, David M.D. (Ellen) of Pittsburgh; four grandchildren, Kirstin (Brian M.D.) Fowler Liu, Kendal (Robert) Kaminski, Kathryn (Peter) Eberle and David Braden (Mary Kathleen) Fowler; and four great-grandchildren, William and Edward Kaminski, and Elena and Vincent Eberle.
She was the fifth of eight children, brothers Jack, Gilbert Jr., Donald and Robert, and her sister, Dorothy Henry Foust preceded her in death, and she is survived by her sisters, Norma Henry Lewis and Shirley Henry Hoover; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Dolores and Raymond were high school sweethearts, who married following her high school graduation in 1949. They were married for 52 years.
She worked in Heeter's General Store in Sligo, while Raymond served in the Panama Canal zone during the Korean War. The couple relocated to Silverville Road in Freeport in 1954, where they built their own house. Dolores lived in that house for 52 years.
She was an active member of the Freeport United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for 20 years, and later assisted with Meals on Wheels for 10 years. Dolores also served as an Allegheny Valley Hospital volunteer for over 35 years.
Weekly Sunday family dinners, couples Sunday school meetings, sewing and card clubs, rounded out her days.
Dolores served her community, but spending time with family and friends was her biggest passion. Teaching her grandchildren to bake and share Christmas cookies and homemade fudge using inherited family recipes will define her legacy.
Since December 2016, Dolores resided at Concordia Lutheran Home in Cabot. While there, Dolores was tenderly cared for by the loving nurses and ancillary staff.
