Family shares special recipe

The Christmas season means one thing for Craig Marburger and Carrie Marburger-Robb: the return of their grandmother's orange cookies.

It helps that the Marburger Farm Dairy produces the buttermilk that is a staple of Grandmother Georgie Marburger's holiday treat.

Craig Marburger, vice president of the dairy at 1506 Mars-Evans City Road in Forward Township, and his sister, Carrie Marburger-Robb, the dairy's secretary-treasurer, would go to their Grandma Georgie's house before the holidays and help her bake cookies, candy and holiday treats for the whole neighborhood.

They said 15 grandchildren would gather in the home, and chocolate, flour and sugar would be flying everywhere. Marburger-Robb said, “It's a family Christmas tradition to use buttermilk to make these cookies for 50 years.”

Her brother hasn't lost his taste for the seasonal treats.

“These are a just a great holiday cookie to have at your Christmas dinner,” he said.

They shared the recipe for the cookies so anyone can start their own holiday tradition.

Makes 48 Orange CookiesCOOKIES:1 cup butter2 cups sugarJuice of one orange1 cup Marburger Farm Dairy Gourmet Buttermilk4 ½ cups flour2 large eggs1 teaspoon baking soda1 teaspoon baking powderBAKING THE COOKIES:Step One: Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease a large cookie sheet, set asideStep Two: Cream butter, orange juice and sugar in a large mixing bowlStep Three: Add eggs in to butter, orange juice and sugar mix and incorporate wellStep Four: In a separate bowl sift in flour, baking soda and baking powder and then add dry ingredients into egg, orange juice, butter and sugar mix.Step Five: Mix in Marburger Farm Dairy's Gourmet Buttermilk.Step Six: Drop tablespoon-fulls of dough on a baking sheet and bake 8-12 minutes until golden brown, allow to cool completely before adding icing.FOR THE ICING:Juice of half an orange4 cups powdered sugar2 tablespoons butter, meltedMix sugar, butter and orange juice in a bowl and spread on completely cooled cookies.
