Chicora to ring in Christmas season Sunday

Pooch Parade planned

Chicora Light Up Night will feature entertainment, food, carriage rides and more on Sunday.

According to Mary Twentier, who is on the event committee, there will be various activities to kick off the holiday season throughout the day. At 2 p.m., there will be a Candy Cane Crawl and Pooch Parade, during which locals can bring their pets dressed up in holiday gear and walk through the town. Participation costs $10, and all proceeds will benefit the Karns City Regional Ambulance service.

From 4 to 7 p.m. on West Slippery Rock Street, food and snack vendors will line the streets, and local singers will entertain in the post office parking lot.

“We're excited this year because last year we were on such a small scale,” Twentier said.

The event will also feature a caricaturist, horse-drawn carriage rides by Misty Lanes Performance Horses and visits from Santa, Mrs. Claus and the Grinch. The Chicora Fire Department will hold a bonfire with s'mores and children's activities behind the fire hall.

“They've been a huge help during this event,” Twentier said of the fire department.

Twentier said the Spirit of the Community award will be given to Daryl Craig on Light Up Night. The award goes to any person who puts time and effort into helping the community.

To close out the evening, there will be a candlelit walk to the Chicora Moose Lodge, where there will be a Christmas tree lighting.

Twentier said she's hopeful people will come out and enjoy the event.

“There's a lot of new things this year, it's good for everyone to come out and be together again after the last year,” Twentier said.
