Officials to meet in mornings
The county commissioners will continue to meet at 10 a.m. every other Wednesday next year, despite requests from some to meet in the evening.
The commissioners at their Wednesday meeting were poised to vote on the 2022 list of meeting dates when a woman asked whether at least some meetings could be held in the evening to accommodate those who work during the daytime.
The woman, and others who have attended meetings over the past several months to advocate for an audit of the 2020 election, told the commissioners many of them have been forced to take vacation days from work to attend the 10 a.m. meetings at the county government center.
Commissioner Kim Geyer said if meetings were held in the evening, the county would have to pay overtime to the county workers attending the meetings.
“There would be a cost factor involved,” Geyer said.
Commissioner Kevin Boozel agreed, and doubted whether the public would attend an evening meeting.
Boozel said the commissioners are available to county residents who want to share concerns.
“It's cost-prohibitive,” Boozel said.
Leslie Osche, commissioners chairwoman, asked solicitor Wil White if the commissioners could legally switch a few daytime meetings to the evening in 2022.
White replied they could legally do so with the proper notification, but most boards and commissions set their meeting dates at the beginning of the year and stick with those dates.
“It is generally frowned upon to mix meetings,” White said.
White, Boozel and Geyer also said they have many evening meetings on other boards throughout the county, which would make it difficult to gather all three commissioners in the evening.
The 2022 meeting dates were approved for 10 a.m. every other Wednesday.
