Woman charged in death of bicyclist struck by car

A Butler woman has been charged after she allegedly hit a bicyclist — who later died — with her vehicle in September.

Butler City Police filed charges Friday against Susan M. Ekstrand, 27, whose vehicle struck and killed Henry Sinopoli, 76, of Butler, while he was riding his bicycle.

“Ekstrand did not stop at the posted stop sign,” said the investigating officer in charging documents.

Ekstrand has been charged with one felony homicide by vehicle and one misdemeanor involuntary manslaughter as well as two traffic violations.

Following the crash, which occurred around 7:55 a.m. Sept. 8 at the intersection of North Washington and Brady streets, Sinopoli was flown to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he died Sept. 10.
