Retail theft, drug sale charges filed
A response by Cranberry Township Police to a retail theft Sunday inadvertently turned into a drug bust.
Travon Lemont Loveings, 32, of Pittsburgh, was charged with felonies of retail theft, possession of stolen property and drug sales.
District Judge David Kovach arraigned Loveings on the charges Sunday and placed him in Butler County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bond.
According to charging documents, police reported to an alleged retail theft at Walmart around 11:45 a.m. The report said the alleged thief was a Black man wearing sweat pants, a tie-dye hoodie and a Steelers face mask.
Police said that while driving to the location, they spotted a white BMW peel out of the Pure Hockey parking lot, which is where the alleged thief had run to, per the report. Police said they immediately stopped the vehicle. Police said not long into the interaction, the man admitted to taking items from Walmart, and he was detained for the retail theft.
“During a search incident to arrest, (a fellow officer) advised me he found a bundle (10 stamp bags) of heroin inside (Loveings') front left pocket,” police said.
Police said they kept searching through the man's clothing, finding about $415.
“Loveings was further searched and found in possession of a plastic bag containing four bricks of heroin,” police said.
Four bricks of heroin is the equivalent of 200 stamp bags, and on Tuesday police said all of the heroin was found on his person.
While drug sales is a serious charge, police said they also are taking the retail theft just as seriously.
According to court documents, Loveings allegedly stole $689 worth of items from the store, but the types of items were not listed.
Loveings has 21 retail theft convictions noted in his criminal history, and also has retail theft charges in Ohio and Illinois.
A preliminary hearing for Loveings has been scheduled for Nov. 19 before Kovach.
