Students to pack lunches for Haiti
Portersville Christian School students will pack meals on Nov. 4 to “Feed the Need” for Christian schools in Haiti.
The meal-packing party is in partnership with The Champion Group, a fundraising company that aids U.S. private schools in packing 10,000 meals for Haitian orphanages and schools.
Ashley Charles, Portersville Christian School's administrative assistant and participant captain for the event, said students and their families were also given a fundraising site for their friends to donate to the cause. The school has already raised $40,000 of its $100,000 goal.
“This is a new event, so (people) don't know what to expect,” Charles said. “We've already received some corporate sponsorships.”
Charles said Portersville wanted to collaborate with Champion Group after hearing about another Christian school having a successful fundraising campaign with them.
“We wanted to have a fundraiser that was more meaningful, something that would have an impact,” Charles said.
Charles said students will use the gym as a packing center for the meals, which include rice, protein, dried vegetables and vitamin mix.
All materials and shipments are provided by The Champion Group.
“(Champion) takes pictures of the children receiving the meals (in Haiti),” Charles said. “It's cool our kids get to see that.”
As an incentive to raise funds and get children excited about the event, the school has created a balloon wall, where youths can pop balloons and win a prize for every $200 dollars they raise. Prizes vary from candy bars to a Nintendo Switch or a premium parking spot.
“We had 70 balloon pops last week,” Charles said. “It gets kids excited.”
Charles said the real goal of the event is to help children think of the global impact they can have with a good deed.
“We want to teach them to be servants and think of others,” Charles said.
Anyone interested in donating to the “Feed the Need” event at Portersville Christian School can send a donation to the school with a designation for “Feed the Need” or by visiting app.mobilecause/vf/portersville.
