Woman dies Sunday after last week's I-79 crash

A Mercer woman died Sunday stemming from her involvement in a crash last week on Interstate 79 in Jackson Township, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's office.

A report from the examiner's office showed Marilyn Suchy, 61, died around 1:27 p.m. Sunday at a hospital.

Following the crash at about 10:15 a.m. Oct. 19 near mile marker 83 of I-79 Southbound, Suchy had been flown by helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian for “suspected serious injury,” according to a state police report.

Suchy was an employee of Butler Technologies, where she had worked for more than 19 years in inside sales.

She was described by her colleagues as a hard-working and passionate person, who genuinely took interest in the people she met and their lives.

Colleagues also noted she took great pride in being involved with Salvation Army and in her church community in which she served as eucharistic minister.

Police said Suchy was the first car hit by a vehicle driven by Kendra Benton, 21, of Sandy Lake, who has since been cited for speeding.

The initial collision caused a chain reaction with four other vehicles, and six others were taken to the hospital for evaluation of suspected minor injuries, according to police.
