Karns City students to salute veterans

KARNS CITY — Karns City High School will honor local veterans at an all-school assembly Nov. 10.

Veterans will march into the school gym prior to proceedings, which include various speakers and patriotic performances by the school's choir and concert band. The annual event is returning after a year off due to COVID-19.

Amanda Walters, the school's band director, said any veteran is welcome to come and receive recognition at the assembly.

“We decorate the hallways for them, serve them lunch ... It's a production,” Walters said.

Attending veterans can attend the lunch hosted at the high school at noon, then march into the assembly at 1 p.m.

The school choir will sing the national anthem to kick off the ceremony, and the concert band will play “Marches of the Armed Forces.” Local veteran Ron Huff will be a guest speaker, and veterans of the Coast Guard Art Greathead and Eugene Wise will give readings at the event.

“This is to honor our veterans,” Walters said. “It's to teach the kids the importance of their sacrifices.”
