Butler Twp. poster contest winners commended
BUTLER TWP — The Butler Township Commissioners recognized five elementary school students Monday who won the township's annual fire poster contest.
The theme for the contest was “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety,” so the posters, made by Butler Area School District students from kindergarten to fourth grade, displayed art highlighting different alarm sounds and how people should respond to them.
The winners were kindergartner Gabrielle Cosgrove of Connoquenessing Elementary, first grader Phoebe Leech of McQuistion Elementary, second grader Collins Kramer of Connoquenessing Elementary, third grader Arianna Leech of McQuistion Elementary and fourth grader Paige Singer of McQuistion Elementary.
McQuistion Elementary took home the traveling trophy, which is given to the school that gets the most participation in the contest.
“To coincide with fire prevention week, we always do it,” said commission president Dave Zarnick. “We're trying to get the kids thinking about fire prevention, get their parents involved, get them to plan their escape routes, start thinking about if they hear alarms, what do they do.”
Commissioner Jim Lokhaiser presented the students with trophies and junior firefighter's caps.
In unrelated business, township manager Tom Knights said the township collected a total of 1,600 pounds of computers, monitors and televisions this quarter, from July to September.
“The township has an enhanced household hazardous electronic waste program as part of our garbage contract,” Knights said. “It's for anybody wanting to recycle those harder items we all kind of struggle to get rid of, such as broken electronics or paints.”
