Man accused of trying break-in
UPDATE: This story was updated at 4 p.m. March 28, 2023 to reflect that Jack Libert completed ARD on Oct. 27, 2022 and his record was expunged.
A 2:30 a.m. police call resulted in a “bad night” for a Mars man.
Jack Edward Libert, 50, faces a felony criminal trespass charge, as well as misdemeanor prowling and defiant trespass and summary public drunkenness charges.
He is accused of repeatedly trying to push open an Adams Township home's door in the early hours of Monday.
Police were called to the Adams house for a burglary in progress just before 2:30 a.m., according to a police affidavit. When they arrived, officers saw a man wearing jeans, socks and a Steelers shirt sitting beside a tree in the front yard, the affidavit said.
Libert identified himself to officers, according to police, and his clothes had burrs on them, his jeans were wet and his breath smelled of alcohol.
“Libert indicated that his car was nearby, that his name was Jack, that he lived in Mars, and that he had a bad night and that he '(messed) up,'” the affidavit said.
The homeowners also had a bad night. According to the affidavit, the couple was woken up at about 2:15 a.m. by their dog barking and running down the hall, and noticed the outside motion light was on.
Their dog ran to the kitchen door, the affidavit said, where one homeowner heard a male voice talking and saw the door being repeatedly pushed in “at least six times.”
Although the homeowner told the man to go away, the male voice replied that he had “something for” the homeowner, according to police. The homeowner then told the man she would shoot him if he entered the house, he “continued to attempt to push the door open multiple times,” according to the affidavit, and the homeowner said the police were en route.
Officers found a vehicle registered to Libert in a wooded area nearby, and close to the vehicle was a pair of shoes, according to police.
Libert was arraigned shortly before 9 a.m. Monday and remains out of jail on nonmonetary bail.
