Work on Sullivan Run starts next week

BUTLER — West Brady Street will be closed intermittently next week as pre-work begins on the Sullivan Run control project.

Butler city Councilman Bob Dandoy said at Thursday's meeting that the first step is the relocation of a gas line, which kicks off the run's clearing process that will take “a little while.”

Building code official John Evans said during the meeting that the project site will go through some construction phases before being completed.

“Once it's installed, they have to do testing of the existing line,” Evans said. “It has to pass the test, and then once that happens they will start connecting all the service customers up to the new line, and once that is completed they will do the reconstruction of the road.”

The city also approved the final payment for a new ladder truck for the Bureau of Fire. The truck, a Pierce 100-foot Mid-Mount Tower ladder, cost approximately $1.3 million through an agreement with Glick Fire Equipment Co.

Bureau of Fire chief Christopher Switala said the truck has to go through the state vehicle inspection and then get equipped with the necessary tools before it rolls up to its first fire scene.

“The truck was delivered to Zelienople yesterday,” Switala said. “It should be here within two weeks, I would imagine.”

The Butler Bureau of Fire will host a first responders day event at 2 p.m. Oct. 17 at Pullman Park to give residents a look at the new engine.

The council also voted for the annual Community Development Block Grant, which is $331,593 this year.

“They increased it this year, actually,” Mayor Ben Smith said about the funding amount. “It's only slightly increased.”
