SRU hires new chief diversity officer to promote equality
Slippery Rock University named Anthony Jones as its chief diversity officer Thursday, and he will work to advance all aspects of global diversity and inclusion at the school.
According to a news release from the university, Jones has been the associate dean for diversity and inclusion at Thiel College for three years, and has a doctoral degree in educational leadership and policy studies from Eastern Kentucky University, where he also earned a master’s degree in student personnel with a concentration in counseling.
In his work, Jones led various diversity conferences and taught courses on the first-year experience, community engagement and global education. He also advised Black student unions, Latino student associations, international student associations and LGBTQIA associations, the news release said.
“My track record has extensive experience in student retention, advocacy, safeguarding culture,” Jones said in the news release, “and finding opportunities to build symbiotic relationships with advocacy groups to drive education and cultural diversity.”
SRU president William Behre said the university strives to promote equity and inclusion.
“I firmly believe that a more diverse, open and inclusive environment creates a richer experience for our entire campus community,” Behre said.
Jones is expected to join SRU in mid-December.
