Memorial Mass for Rep. Steighner to be Saturday

The public is invited to remember the late state Rep. Joe Steighner at a memorial Mass at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Catholic Church in Butler.

Steighner, 69, died Aug. 11, 2020 at his home after a brief battle with cancer.

Steighner was a Butler High School graduate and attended Butler County Community College and Slippery Rock University.

He remains the youngest person to hold the 11th legislative district seat, and set records for the most votes and widest margin of victory when he was elected in 1978.

Steighner served as chairman of the House Game and Fisheries Committee and was a member of the House Conservation Committee.

Steighner retired Nov. 30, 1994 from the state House of Representatives and founded Joseph A. Steighner and Associates consuling and lobbying firm in Harrisburg.

He was an avid outdoorsman, having enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf.

Steighner's widow, Joan, along with Bonnie Travaglio, the widow of state Rep. Guy Travaglio, who was elected to Steighner's seat after his resignation, will receive memorial citations from state Rep. Marci Mustello, who now occupies the 11th district seat.

A luncheon and gathering to remember Steighner will be held in the church hall after Saturday's memorial Mass.
