Joseph Scuro Jr.

Joseph V. Scuro Jr., 87, of Butler, passed away at his home Thursday, after an extended illness with his loving family by his side.

Joe was born June 12, 1934, in Pittsburgh, to Joseph and Concetto Berretti Scuro.

Joe graduated from Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, and attended Duquesne University before joining the U.S. Army. He served two years and was stationed at Fort Dix, N.J., with deployments to France, Germany and Italy.Joe worked at Heinz Corp. and Campbell Soup in Pittsburgh, as well as International Staple and Marmon Keystone in East Butler, and retired in 1999.During his free time, Joe enjoyed family trips to Cedar Point, Hidden Valley, Las Vegas, New Jersey, Niagara Falls, Orlando and Seven Springs, to name a few. In his earlier years, he enjoyed going to the beach, dancing the jitterbug with his wife, and playing baseball, basketball, bowling and volleyball.He enjoyed swimming and taking his daughter and nephews to Alameda Park. Later in life, he enjoyed spending time with his great-nephew, Austin Rottman, who loved filling up Joe's dessert plate. Joe had a big sweet tooth, with cookies, cake, and ice cream being some of his favorite treats. He also loved Italian food, especially when enjoyed on a Sunday afternoon with his family, followed by a game of cards. Joe was an ardent Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers fan, cheering them on.Joe is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nancy Spohn Scuro; and his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Eric Dodd, of Butler.He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Linda (Larry) Rottman; his brothers-in-law, Fred (Nora) Spohn and John (Linda) Spohn; and numerous nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Rose Costanzo; and his brothers, Tony and Albert Scuro. His infant son, Albert, also preceded him in death.SCURO — Friends of Joseph V. Scuro Jr., who died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2021, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 22, 2021, at Martin Funeral Home, 429 Center Ave., Butler.A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at All Saints Parish, St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, 432 Center Ave., Butler, with the Rev. John J. Baver officiating.Burial will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery in Herman.Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by VFW Post 249, American Legion Post 117, and American Legion Post 778.In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Grane Hospice Care, 260 Alpha Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15238.The family requests that masks be worn at the funeral home, the church and the cemetery.Please visit www.martinfh.net.
