It wasn't totally Cooper Baxter's show.But he was the ringleader.Butler's senior quarterback threw for 134 yards and a touchdown, rushed for 130 and three scores Friday night as the Golden Tornado defeated Meadville, 27-13, in their home football season opener at Art Bernardi Stadium.“The coaches designed a great gameplan and we players went out and executed that plan,” Baxter said. “This felt pretty good.”

WEST VIEW — Beating an old rival on the road was important for Seneca Valley quarterback Graham Hancox.Though, ultimately, the Raiders' 17-7 victory over North Hills Friday night at Martorelli Stadium provided value beyond the non-conference win.Seneca Valley's offense showed balance, the team overcame several inopportune blunders and the Raiders gained momentum heading into Quad County Conference play next week.

WEST DEER TWP — A victory is always sweet.It's even more sweet when it's your first win in almost two years.Knoch football did just that as the Knights defeated Deer Lakes 21-13 at Deer Lakes high school in WPIAL 4A non-conference action Friday night.“I'm just proud of the way we came out,” Knoch coach Brandon Mowry said. “Kind of picked up where we left off last week. Gave them a little life at the end, but I'm proud of the way our kids hung in there.”

KARNS CITY — It was the first time this season that Karns City's football team trailed on the scoreboard.It didn't last long.The Gremlins piled up more than 400 yards on offense and after an early letdown defensively, put the clamps on Central Clarion in a 37-13 District 9 Large School Division victory Friday night at Diehl Stadium.KC (2-0, 3-0) was put on its heels early when Central Clarion's Breckin Rex rumbled 69 yards for a touchdown less than four minutes into the game.

ADAMS TWP — Sometimes what’s old is new again.The Mars Planets were hoping to open up their offense to more passing this season, but Friday night they returned to their old-fashioned running game.Sophomore Evan Wright rushed for 190 yards on 26 carries, including scoring runs of 61 and 15 yards.Still, Mars could not hold back a powerful New Castle offense in a 40-14 non-conference setback at the Mars Athletic Complex. The Planets fell to 0-3 for the first time since 2003.

BUFFALO TWP — The bad part about taking risks is that sometimes they don't pan out.Down by a touchdown with time ticking away in the second quarter of Friday night's non-conference football clash, Freeport coach John Gaillot chose to try to get something going after his defense stopped Avonworth on downs on the Yellowjackets' 40.He called for Garrett King to pass, but the Antelopes' Andrew Kuban picked it off and the visitors promptly tacked another score on the board before the gun to lead 14-0 at the break.
