Man charged with multiple offenses

John Mohan
Allegedly admits to break-in, fight

A Butler man allegedly packed a number of offenses into one Friday morning.

State police arrested and charged John L. Mohan, 38, of Butler, with multiple offenses after they said he broke into a Fairview Township home and began fighting with one of its residents, which ended when he was hit over the head with a set of Channellock pliers.

Mohan was charged with felony burglary as well as misdemeanors of simple assault, defiant trespassing, drug and paraphernalia possession and driving while intoxicated.

Following his arraignment by District Judge Lewis Stoughton, Mohan was placed in Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail.

According to charging documents, Butler County 911 dispatchers sent police to the scene of a break-in at 135 Givens Street.

Police said the home belonged to a woman who was asleep on the couch with a man when Mohan arrived, based on interviews with the two.

Police said Mohan had moved out of the home two days before and wanted to pick up belongings, but the woman told him not to come over that day.

“Mohan did show me text messages, which I observed him telling (the woman) that he planned to stop by and (the woman) telling him not to stop (by) until Sunday,” police said.

According to police, the two people were awakened to the door being busted open so hard the door hit the couch. Police said Mohan had opened the door and found it locked with a chain, but he could see the two sleeping on the couch.

“(The man) advised that Mohan immediately began attacking him,” police said.

According to the combined statements of all three involved, as the fight escalated the man tackled Mohan through the open door, onto the front porch and into a handrail. Police said Mohan then bit the man on the arm and tried to gouge his eyes.

“(The man) advised that he struck Mohan in the back of the head with a pair of Channellock (pliers), which ended the altercation,” police said.

Following their conversations with the three people, which included Mohan's own alleged admission of breaking into the home and engaging in a fight with the other man, police arrested Mohan.

During the arrest, police allegedly found a needle and a loose gabapentin pill in Mohan's pockets, and they noted he had also driven to the home, which resulted in the driving-while-intoxicated charge.

A preliminary hearing for Mohan has been scheduled Sept. 14 before Stoughton.
