The Pirates (48-86) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a three-run homer by Colin Moran against Cubs starter Keegan Thompson. Thompson only pitched 1.2 innings.
Pirate starter Mitch Keller worked the first six innings, blanking the Cubs on six hits and striking out eight. He did not walk a batter.
Chad Kuhl started the seventh on the mound for Pittsburgh and surrendered both home runs.
Chicago had 12 hits through the first seven innings.
A number of Cubs pitchers combined to limit the Pirates to four hits.
Having lost three straight on their current road trip, the Pirates play the second of their four-game series against the Cubs Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field.
