Pirates lose to ChiSox again
CHICAGO — Gavin Sheets hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the third inning Wednesday night and added a second round-tripper later, sparking the Chicago White Sox to a 6-3 victory over the Pirates.
The win gave the first-place White Sox (78-56) a sweep of the two-game series.
Sheets’ blast came with two outs and two strikes against Pirate starter Max Kranick. Kranick worked 4.2 innings, allowing eight hits and five runs. He also surrendered a run-scoring double to Leury Garcia.
Carlos Rondon was the starting and winning pitcher for Chicago, allowing a run on five hits in five innings. He struck out five.
Pittsburgh (48-85) scored its run on an RBI single by Cole Tucker in the fifth and a solo homer by Anthony Alford in the seventh.
Tucker doubled and scored on a two-out Jacob Stallings single in the eighth. The Pirates stranded the tying runners on base that inning.
The Pirates set a franchise record when pitcher Shelby Miller entered the game in the seventh. Miller became the 58th man to play for the Pirates this year, breaking the previous club mark.
Sheets hit a solo homer off Duane Underwood Jr. in the eighth inning.
Chicago banged out 11 hits on the night. The Pirates had eight hits.
The Pirates stay in Chicago and play the Cubs Thursday night at Wrigley Field, beginning a four-game series with their division rival.
