Asst. principal greets year with optimism
The first day of school has passed many times for Garrett Miller, but the start of school Wednesday was one of the most exciting for him yet.
After teaching social studies at Slippery Rock Area High School for the past five years, Miller assumed the role of assistant principal when the school board approved his hiring Monday.
Being in a new position has Miller excited for new experiences.
“It's definitely a change of perspective, but I think it's going to be a great year,” Miller said. “I'm looking forward to seeing all the great things the teachers are doing and looking to get good school culture going.”
After the end of the 2019-20 school year was mired by COVID-19, and the 2020-21 school year was also affected, Miller said it seems many students and teachers are cautiously optimistic about this school year.
“I'm seeing students I had who are now in their junior and senior years,” he said. “There are some students who are currently juniors and this is, hopefully, their first full year of high school.”
Miller said he had already been spreading school spirit during his teaching years, and he plans to continue chaperoning dances and attending school football games as assistant principal.
Overall, Miller said one of his goals is to keep the campus community in good spirits.
“Students are excited to be back to normal as close as we can,” Miller said. “We have some mitigations like smaller class sizes, but there seems to be an atmosphere of excitement.”
