Police say man repeats flush, flood in cell

Charged with 3 felony counts

One Butler man is alleged to be making flooding his jail cell a calling card.

City police arrested Brian J. Vlassich, 41, Thursday night after he allegedly broke into a Butler home and crashed his vehicle into a building while driving intoxicated.

According to charging documents, Vlassich was initially taken to the Butler City Police Department following his arrest, and he flooded his holding cell.

“Vlassich placed his mattress into the toilet and continued to flush, causing the cell to flood with water,” said the investigating officer. “After removing the mattress, Vlassich then placed his foot into the toilet, causing it to flood more.”

Vlassich was arrested in June for a suspected DUI. Police in that case said Vlassich flooded the cell, and one of his charges included institutional vandalism, a misdemeanor.

That case has proceeded to the Butler County Court of Common Pleas, where Vlassich last attended a formal arraignment Aug. 16. Vlassich posted $15,000 bail Aug. 7, releasing him from Butler County Prison.

Vlassich's latest charges include three felonies, and he is in jail on $75,000 bond.

In the case filed Friday, Vlassich is charged with three felony counts, one criminal attempt, one burglary and one aggravated assault.

He is also charged with four misdemeanor counts, one reckless endangerment, one resisting arrest, one leaving the scene of a crash and one DUI.

According to charging documents, police responded to a call around 10:18 p.m. Thursday, sending them to an apartment on the 300 block of South Main Street in Butler.

“Butler Control then reported that the male actor drove his vehicle into the building prior to fleeing westbound in the vehicle on Brush Street,” police said.

The residents of the apartment told officers that Vlassich had first pounded on the door about 30 times before he pushed the air conditioner out of the window.

“(One of the residents) grabbed a frying pan from the kitchen and responded to the window, and viewed Vlassich attempting to gain entry,” police said.

Police said when Vlassich failed to enter through the window, he got into his 2004 Dodge truck and backed the vehicle into the building.

During the investigation, other officers found Vlassich on the 200 block of West Wayne Street in Butler. Police said while trying to detain Vlassich, he pushed away from them and tried to enter his home.

“Minimum force was then used on Vlassich to take him to the ground,” police said. “While on the ground, Vlassich did drop a metal thermos type drinking container that contained an alcoholic beverage.”

Police said while searching Vlassich they also found a crack pipe in his pocket.

Police said Vlassich continued to resist throughout his transport.

“Vlassich began to kick and thrash around in the rear seat,” police said.

Police said Vlassich refused blood testing and continued to yell and scream profanities at them while they requested the tests. Shortly afterward, Vlassich allegedly flooded his cell, for which no charges have been filed.

District Judge David Kovach arraigned Vlassich Friday morning. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Aug. 30 before District Judge William Fullerton.
