Dollar General fire investigated

Smoke, water damage limited

DONEGAL TWP — A small fire was quickly extinguished, but smoke filled the Dollar General in Donegal Township on Monday.

Chicora Volunteer Fire Department chief Cody Craig said a call came in about 12:30 p.m. for a fire at the store's loading dock, and within about 15 minutes, the responding departments had the situation contained.

While a few employees were able to take care of the fire burning some store merchandise, the department arrived to find a small fire still simmering.

“Some employees contained it with fire extinguisher,” he said. “It caused no damage to the building; just some smoke and water damage. It was over pretty quick.”

Katie Ellison, Dollar General spokesperson, said the store on Chicora Road southeast of the borough was closed for a remodel at the time of the fire.

She did not confirm reports that the store was evacuated because of smoke in the interior.

“We are thankful all employees exited the building safely and were not harmed,” Ellison said via email. “We continue to work collaboratively with local authorities and the fire marshal on their review of what may have caused the fire.”

Craig said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The store will transition from a Dollar General to a DG Market in the remodel.

Ellison said the store will reopen on Thursday.

Bruin VFD, Sugarcreek Township VFD, East Butler VFD, Lick Hill VFD and Karns City EMS also responded to the scene.

Staff writer Eddie Trizzino contributed to this report.
