State parks deal with severe weather

Rain can put a damper on the day of anyone looking to explore a state park, but severe weather can also cause problems for the parks.

Brian Flores, assistant manager of Moraine State Park, said heavy rain can raise the water level at Lake Arthur, which can make swimming or even boating a little more treacherous.

“It takes a lot of water, but if we get multiple storms or it rains day after day, that's going to raise the water level a little,” Flores said. “Couple that with drainage, that could affect some areas of the lake and shore.”

The severe weather and days of heavy rain have hit Moraine this summer, but the park hasn't faced too many weather-related issues as a result.

Flores said storms can topple trees in the park, damage park facilities and even knock out electricity. The park staff deals with problems like these as they come along.

He also said park leadership urges park visitors to be aware of weather conditions and respond appropriately. Park rangers will also be at the ready if storm clouds roll towards the park. “If we have a storm coming in quick, we'll be on edge and ready,” Flores said. “We'll do some extra patrols, look out for boats. We do have kind of a keen eye when harsh weather comes by.”

Lake Arthur's water level can be controlled with a dam operated by the park administrators. Flores said the park has used it recently for damage control.

“Last winter, we lowered the water for resource management and prevention from damage to docks,” Flores said.
