Summit Twp. man faces drug charges

He's accused of getting meds from China

Authorities have issued an arrest warrant for a Summit Township man involved in the selling of psychedelic mushrooms and prescription medication obtained from China from his home.

State police filed charges Tuesday against Matthew G. Williams, 43, related to a search of his home in December 2020, that yielded more than 350 grams of psychedelic mushrooms and more than 1 kilogram of the drug pregabalin.

Williams is charged with one felony count of drug possession with intent to deliver; two misdemeanor counts of drug possession; and one misdemeanor count of possessing drug paraphernalia.

According to charging documents, the U.S. Homeland Security Office in Pittsburgh, assisted by state police and the FDA Office of Criminal Investigations, coordinated a controlled delivery of a FedEx package meant for Williams' home.

“The shipment was manifested as 'olive leaf extract,'” said the state police officer in the affidavit. “Upon examination, officers discovered one clear bag containing a powdery substance.”

Police said the substance was tested and identified as pregabalin, an anticonvulsant and anxiolytic medication used to treat epilepsy, neuropathic pain and generalized anxiety disorders, among other things. It is known to be addictive in high doses, and federal law lists it as a controlled substance.

According to police, the shipment was coming from Xian, China, and it included Williams' personal information, address and phone number.

Authorities applied in advance for a search warrant, pending delivery, and they watched the house. Police said an undercover trooper approached the home with the package in hand after seeing Williams' truck in the driveway.

“Williams opened the door, identified himself and accepted delivery of the suspect parcel,” police said.

Police said about 10 minutes later, Williams opened the door again, put the package on his porch, and then he and his wife began walking toward their vehicle. Police said they detained both Williams and his wife and began searching the home.

“Upon entry, agents secured the residence and located a large psilocybin mushroom grow operation that encompassed the basement and second floor of the residence,” police said.

According to court documents, authorities found 275 Mason jars containing mushroom spores, 146 bags of psilocybin mushrooms, and four bags of dried mushrooms as well as paraphernalia related to the growing, drying and selling of mushrooms.

Police said authorities also found three small bags of suspected pregabalin, a .22-caliber pistol and signs that showed Williams and his wife were living there.

According to police, special agents spoke with Williams at the scene, but Williams was told he was not under arrest and was allowed to leave at the time.

The charges were filed through District Judge Lewis Stoughton's office, where preliminary proceedings will take place after Williams' arrest.
