Police believe motor home fire was arson
State police have deemed that a Friday morning motor home fire was intentional.
“The motor home had been almost completely consumed in the fire,” said police in the affidavit. “The damage resulted in a complete oxidized and warped shell that once was the motor home.”
Keith L. Allen, 35, of Hadley, was charged with felony counts of criminal mischief and possessing incendiary materials, related to the motor home fire at about 10:15 a.m. Friday at the intersection of Vincent and County Line roads in Marion Township.
Following his arraignment Friday night by District Judge Lewis Stoughton, Allen was placed in Butler County Prison, where he remains on $10,000 bond.
According to charging documents, police responded when a passerby called for help. Police said the witness saw the fire in its early stages while driving.
“He also observed the door to the motor home to be opened,” police said.
Police said the witness stopped his car and walked back to the motor home while calling for help. Police said during that time, the witness walked past Allen.
“(Allen) approached and mumbled some words to (the witness) and continued walking north onto Farren Surrena Road,” police said.
According to police, troopers picked up Allen about 10 minutes later along Farren Surrena Road, and they told the fire marshal that Allen had three lighters and cigarettes in his pockets.
Police said with Allen in custody, they examined the motor home further and spoke with its owner, who was not Allen. According to police, the owner said the home had been at the location for about one year and was valued at about $8,000.
“She said the door was locked and windows secured,” police said. “She also related that the battery had been removed from it.”
Police said they later interviewed Allen, who said he threw a brick through the home’s window to gain access.
“He then entered the inside of the motor home, where he used the bathroom,” police said. “He then admitted to taking a pillow and putting it on the driver-side seat and lighting it on fire with his Bic-style cigarette lighter.”
According to police, Allen said he left the home and went into the nearby woods for a brief time before returning to the road when he heard the passerby’s vehicle.
“He said he lit the motor home on fire because he believed it belonged to a family that he dislikes,” police said.
Allen is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing Tuesday before Stoughton.
